Safe and Compliant Transportation of Excepted Lithium Batteries by Ground (49 CFR) and Air (ICAO/IATA) 2024 (Course)

This course may be used for both initial and recurrent training.
This course is intended for the training of hazmat / dangerous goods employees responsible for the handling, shipping, or transportation of excepted lithium batteries by ground (road or rail) and air, using the requirements of the 49 CFR and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). It explains the various types of lithium battery technologies in use today and has been designed to meet the adequate instruction and function-specific training requirements of the regulations for excepted lithium batteries.
Lithium battery types covered in this course include:
  • Lithium Ion Cells & Batteries
    • Small (all modes) – Not to exceed 20 Wh/cell or 100 Wh/battery
    • Medium (ground only) – Not to exceed 60 Wh/cell or 300 Wh/battery
  • Lithium Metal Cells & Batteries
    • Small (all modes) – Not to exceed 1 g lithium/cell or 2 g lithium/battery
    • Medium (ground only) – Not to exceed 5 g lithium/cell or 25 g lithium/battery
Learning Objectives / Modules:
Navigating the hazmat table and § 173.185 of 49 CFR, as well as the IATA List of Dangerous Goods, as well and packing instructions 965 to 970, to determine the applicable requirements for safe the transportation of excepted lithium batteries by ground and air, including:
  • Classification of lithium batteries
  • Lithium battery test summary requirements
  • Exceptions to the regulations (packaging & marking requirements)
  • Domestic shipment of excepted lithium batteries in the US
  • International shipment of excepted lithium batteries by air (ICAO/IATA)
  • Most recent regulatory changes
Target Audience:
Hazmat/DG employees and their supervisors (including office and customer service staff) who work for shippers, carriers, freight forwarders, third party logistics companies, and who handle, prepare, transport, or offer excepted lithium batteries for ground and/or air transport to, from or within the US.
Pre-requisite: Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods Transportation General Awareness & Security Awareness Training
