49 CFR Hazardous Materials Security Awareness (Course)

This course is designed to provide comprehensive training on hazardous materials security awareness requirements outlined in 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart I.  The course focuses on enhancing security awareness and understanding the critical role of hazardous materials employees in maintaining security awareness.
Learning Objectives / Modules:
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the security requirements and procedures as required by the hazardous materials regulations (49 CFR). The course covers key topics such as:
  • Understanding Security Awareness: An overview of security awareness, its purpose, and its impact on transportation security.
  • Security Risks and Threats: Identification of potential security risks in the transportation sector and measures to mitigate them.
  • Written Security Plans: Explanation of programs, policies, risk assessments, and implementing appropriate controls.
The course utilizes interactive computer-based training methods, quizzes, and real-world scenarios, to ensure participants can apply their knowledge in practical situations. Upon completion of the course, participants will be better equipped to contribute to their company’s hazardous materials security awareness procedures and comply with the hazardous materials regulations. Please note that this course is designed to enhance security awareness and does not constitute legal advice. Employees performing functions related to the offering or transport of hazardous materials must evaluate comply with the training requirements in 49 CFR 172.704.
Target Audience: 
Hazmat employees with job responsibilities for shipping, logistics, management, and freight forwarders who prepare, handle, ship, or transport hazardous materials by ground to, from or within the US. This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
  • warehouse staff that are packing hazardous materials
  • office staff that are preparing shipments of hazmat
  • employees responsible for ordering hazmat shipping supplies (i.e. marks, labels, packaging, etc.)
  • pick/packers
  • logistics staff marking, labeling packages
  • logistics staff loading/unloading hazmat/DG 
  • employees preparing, or validating/signing, hazmat shipping documents 
  • staff providing or offering placards or placarded loads
  • supervisors with hazmat transportation compliance responsibilities
  • customer service staff or procurement staff that are addressing customer’s hazmat returns
